Family Mediation

What is family Mediation?

Separation and divorce is a painful experience for all involved, particularly children. Children suffer less harm and cope better with the changes involved when the parents are able to avoid conflict.

Family Mediation can assist you to reach decisions concerning where the children will live and contact arrangements,

Family Mediation can help you reach agreement over what to do with the family home, possessions and finances.

Who is family Mediation for?

Family Mediation is for couples who are separating or divorcing, or at any time after separation or divorce if issues arise.

Grandparents and step-parents can come to Family Mediation to discuss ways of keeping contact with children after family breakdown.

Children can also meet with a Mediator during Mediation when appropriate

What happens in Family Mediation?

For your first meeting you will be able to choose whether to attend alone or with the other person.

This initial meeting is an opportunity to discuss what you hope to achieve through Mediation and ask any questions. It will enable you and us to decide if Mediation is right for you.

If Mediation continues, further appointments will be attended together. We can arrange separate arrival and leaving times if you wish. Separate waiting rooms are provided.

Our trained Mediators will help you discuss your issues. They can help you explore options and support you in negotiating a mutually acceptable agreement. They will not tell you what to do and will not take sides.

You will be encouraged to seek independent legal advice during Mediation.

What does it cost?

If you are on a low income or benefits you may qualify for Community Legal Service funding to cover all the costs of Mediation, as well as legal advice and help during Mediation. We will assess this at your first meeting.

If you do not qualify, our scale of fees will apply.

Is Mediation confidential?

Yes. However, Mediators are obliged to report any significant risk of harm to a child or others, to the appropriate authority.

What you say in Mediation is confidential and legally privileged – that is, it cannot be used in court.
